Student Engagement Collaborative

The COVID-19 pandemic upended education as we knew it, disrupting the lives of students across the nation. No adult can fully understand what being a student during the pandemic has been like, which only reinforces the need for engaging students in pandemic recovery policy discussions. NASBE’s Student Engagement Collaborative aims to help center student voice in state education policymaking and pandemic recovery with the goal of improving outcomes for all students.

About the Student Engagement Collaborative

The Student Engagement Collaborative is a community of student members on state boards of education from across the nation. Collaborative participants receive virtual cross-state collaboration opportunities, training in board processes, policy analysis and action plan development, and technical assistance to support them in designing their own action plan to address a school health issue in their state. By the end of the program, students will also present their action plan to their peers for feedback before presenting to their state board of education or other targeted audience.

The Collaborative will also help build the capacity of state leaders to engage youth in decisionmaking. Participating students will also be paired with a non-student board member on their state board who will serve as a mentor. Mentors will have the opportunity to build meaningful youth engagement on their state board of education while ensuring student members are equipped with the skills and knowledge to inform board deliberations.

Call for Student Member Videos

NASBE is dedicated to elevating student voices and providing a platform for student leaders to engage with education policymakers. At this year’s Legislative Conference, one of our goals is to ensure all students serving as state board members or on a student advisory council can share their experiences advising state education leaders and ideas for building a student-centered education system. We are calling all students serving as state-level advisors to submit short video vignettes to be shared on NASBE’s website and throughout the Legislative Conference. This is a great opportunity to showcase student leadership and how state boards partner with youth to tackle education issues. Learn more about the opportunity and guidelines here and email all video submissions to Celina Pierrottet by February 28, 2023.
