NASBE President and CEO Kristen Amundson to Retire

Alexandria, VA – After five years at the helm of the National Association of State Boards of Education, NASBE President and CEO Kristen Amundson has announced she will retire at the end of the year.

NASBE’s Board of Directors has already named Robert Hull, NASBE’s executive vice president, as Amundson’s successor. Hull will become NASBE president and CEO in January 2019. Amundson will remain active in the association as senior advisor.

“NASBE has served state board of education members for 60 years. Our new strategic plan positions the organization for the next challenges facing education,” Amundson said. “I am proud to have been part of that work.”

“Kris has done an outstanding job leading NASBE in a time when state boards of education are more important than ever,” said Dr. John Kelly, NASBE board chair and member of the Mississippi State Board of Education. “Her political savvy, combined with policy expertise and willingness to bring diverse players together, is the reason why NASBE has been such an important national voice and integral to helping states move the needle on education. We will miss her leadership but wish her all the best for a well-deserved retirement.”

“This is such a critical time for states and state boards of education, and I believe the future is bright for NASBE,” Amundson said. “The NASBE team and Board of Directors have never been stronger or more committed to helping our members ensure equity in education for all students.”
