NASBE Unveils New Strategic Plan: Our Members, Our Mission
NASBE’s strategic plan will empower state boards as citizen leaders and ensure a strong, thriving membership organization for years to come.

Alexandria, Va. – The National Association of State Boards of Education is pleased to present its new strategic plan, which outlines how the association will empower state boards to fully embrace their role as citizen leaders while continuing to offer combined decades of expertise to meet boards’ ongoing needs and ensuring sustainability.

Our Members, Our Mission will help NASBE chart a course for the next several years. The plan sets forth three major goals, all linked to a new mission statement and core values, with the primary core values of equity and excellence at the center. Strategies and areas of opportunity that will guide implementation accompany each goal:

  • NASBE is a thriving membership organization. We will build on the knowledge of boards’ policy goals to recruit, retain, and engage members and attract robust regional and national funding to meet those goals.
  • NASBE members have distinctive, influential voice. NASBE will amplify the collective voice of state boards of education by increasing recognition of boards as the stable center of state education governance and empowering members to lead and advocate in states and nationally.
  • NASBE nurtures a trusted, knowledgeable, and expert team. NASBE will attract, develop, and retain expert personnel who lead and collaborate to accomplish organizational and individual goals in an excellent way.

“NASBE owes its existence to state boards of education and thus has the responsibility to elevate their voice, ensuring that state boards are represented in the national discourse about our public schools,” says NASBE President and CEO Kris Amundson. “We will work hard to assist the citizen leaders on our member boards as they shape education policy in dozens of contexts, providing the tools, resources, and strategic advice they need to ensure equity and excellence for all students.”

This remains NASBE’s mission: to develop, support, and empower citizen leaders on state boards of education to strengthen public education systems so students of all backgrounds and circumstances are prepared to succeed in school, work, and life.
