How State Boards and Legislatures Can Partner on Assessment and Accountability

On June 18 at 3pm ET, the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) and the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) team up for a lively conversation on how state boards and legislatures can together catalyze the evolution and improvement of state assessment and accountability systems. Experts and state leaders will discuss the value of these systems, the theory of action that underpins them, where they have succeeded, and what barriers keep leaders from aligning their systems with a state-driven vision.

The Center for Assessment’s Executive Director Scott Marion and Senior Associate Juan D’Brot will explore the “why” behind assessment and accountability systems and the need to ground the conversations about them in intended purposes. Dr. Byron Ernest from the Indiana State Board of Education, Indiana State Representative Bob Behning, and Maryland’s State Board President Joshua Michael will share the role of collaboration among leaders in refining their state’s systems so they could become more student centered, provide actionable feedback to support continuous improvement in schools and student outcomes. Additional speakers will be added and announced once confirmed.

Following the panel, state legislators, legislative staff, and state board members are invited to join the speakers in a members-only discussion.
