Lu S. Young


Lu S. Young, Ed.D., is a clinical professor in the Department of Educational Leadership Studies at the University of Kentucky College of Education. She also serves as chief leadership officer for the UK Center for Next Generation Leadership. Dr. Young is a former public-school superintendent with more than three decades of service in Kentucky’s P–12 education system.

Dr. Young was appointed to the Kentucky State Board of Education  by Governor Andy Beshear in December 2019 where she currently serves as vice chair. She plays an active role in statewide initiatives such as United We Learn, the Kentucky Portrait of a Learner movement, and the development of innovative assessment and accountability models. She is widely recognized for her leadership in deeper learning, student voice and agency, and learner-centered redesign.

Dr. Young has been actively engaged with NASBE. She has served on the Awards Committee, the Public Education Positions Committee, and the Editorial Advisory Board and has participated in professional learning with the Whole Child Policy Group, Principal Collaborative, and High School Transformation State Network, reflecting her commitment to benefitting from and elevating the collective work of NASBE.
