Keven Ellis

Keven Ellis was elected to the Texas State Board of Education in November of 2016 and re-elected in 2020 and 2022.  He is currently chair of the board having been appointed to this leadership role by Gov. Greg Abbott on Sept. 16, 2019. The appointment was confirmed by the Texas Senate in a 31-0 vote. He was reappointed for a second term as chair in September of 2021.

Ellis is a member of the board’s Committee on School Finance/Permanent School Fund, which oversees agenda items on topics such as Permanent School Fund management oversight, including audit responsibility, investment objectives, and investment decisions; state and federal funding issues; oversight of the Bond Guarantee Program; and review of nominations for certain gubernatorial appointments.

In 2012, he was elected to the Lufkin ISD Board of Trustees and served as board president in 2015-2016, resigning from that post in November 2016 after winning the seat on the state board. He currently serves as a board member for the Texas Permanent School Fund and, since 2019, represents Texas on the Education Commission of the States.
