A State of Engagement: How Policymakers Can Get More Students Invested in Learning

Every 43 seconds a student drops out of school. A lack of engagement is cited as one—if not the—primary culprit, costing the country billions of dollars in lost earnings, healthcare costs, and other expenses. According to Gallup, nearly half of students are not engaged or actively disengaged from school. Unless state policymakers pay closer attention to student engagement, some say, other investments they make in education are a waste.

Join NASBE on March 12, 2015, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. (EST) as NASBE Student Engagement Study Group and Connecticut State Board of Education Chairman Allan Taylor presents findings from the new NASBE report “A State of Engagement.” An educational system that more meaningfully engages students, the report finds, requires states to consider a suite of policies that foster systemic change. State policymakers—and state board of education members in particular—are in a unique position to lead this effort.

Joining Taylor for this NASBE webinar are 2012 Arkansas Teacher of the Year and America Achieves Fellow Kathy Powers, American Institutes for Research’s Co-director of the Health and Social Development Program David Osher, and NASBE Deeper Learning Project Director Ace Parsi. Together, they will discuss how states can ensure significantly more students are invested in their learning, and what such policy change looks like in practice.
