Addressing the Health Drivers of Chronic Absence through State Policy
DATE: March 12, 2019
TIME: 3:00 to 4:00 PM (EDT)

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires states to publicly display data on chronic absence statewide and on school report cards. In addition, 36 states and the District of Columbia opted to include chronic absence as a measure of school success in their ESSA accountability systems. This change positions state boards of education to delve into the causes of chronic absence—many of them health related—and support districts and schools as they seek solutions.

Join NASBE for a webinar to examine the health drivers of chronic absence and opportunities for state boards of education and other state policy actors to address them. Joining NASBE’s Megan Blanco on this webinar are Alex Mays, senior national program director at the Healthy Schools Campaign and co-author on the recent NASBE analysis, Examining Chronic Absence through a Student Health Lens, and Phyllis Jordan of Future Ed at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy, author of several pieces examining chronic absence in schools, including Who’s In: Chronic Absenteeism Under ESSA.
