What We Do
We utilize a tiered technical assistance model to support state boards of education and other key state education leaders to adopt, strengthen and implement policies that promote health in schools.
The four tiers are targeted to different groups of states:
- All States—NASBE provides certain types of technical assistance and resources to any state upon request. See the Resources section below for more information about NASBE publications, webinars, and school health policy database.
- CDC DASH-Funded States—NASBE provides ongoing technical assistance as requested to states that are funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Adolescent and School Health (CDC DASH) to address Coordinated School Health. Forms of technical assistance may include providing tools and resources, presenting at conferences, holding individual consultations, reviewing materials, and more.
- Previous NASBE Grantee States—NASBE provides ongoing assistance to previous grantee states and states that have participated in NASBE events.
- Current NASBE Grantee States—NASBE currently provides grants and direct, intensive technical assistance to a limited number of states to create sustainable programmatic/policy changes and partnerships that support healthy school environments.
Current initiatives include:
- The project to Strengthen Leadership and Governance for HIV Prevention is CDC-DASH funded and focuses on providing research-based capacity-building assistance to DASH-funded state or local education agencies that have expressed a commitment to pursue HIV-related education policy and program improvement initiatives.
- The Increasing Healthy Eating project is CDC-DASH funded and focuses on providing research-based capacity-building assistance and information to education leaders on helping schools establish, maintain, and evaluate healthy school nutrition environments and collaborate with parents, community, and public health partners on increasing healthy eating at school.
- The Obesity Prevention Project is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through its Leadership for Healthy Communities national program, and assists state boards of education and other state policymakers in their efforts to create healthier communities to reduce rates of childhood obesity, especially among students at high risk for obesity
