Healthy Learning Environments are Paramount in ‘Green Cleaning’ Issue of NASBE’s State Education Standard

Arlington, VA — At a time when the number of students with asthma has reached new highs—and when states and districts are increasingly focused on the importance of maximum attendance—the emergence of new, greener products and processes for cleaning schools is now making it possible to provide significantly healthier buildings for students and staff. And it can be done without burdening school budgets.

“Green Cleaning Schools,” the latest issue of The State Education Standard—the award-winning journal of the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE), shines a light on how state policies and guidelines can promote healthier school environments that in turn contribute to higher student achievement.

Ten states now have laws or policies regarding green cleaning in schools. The “Green Cleaning Schools” issue highlights these state actions and many other facets of green cleaning and healthy school buildings. Articles cover the “whys” and “hows” of green cleaning, benefits for students and staff, case studies from three districts implementing green cleaning, policy development, and potential cost savings.

“What is and is not actually ‘green’ is an issue that confronts many of us in our everyday lives when we clean our homes and look after our own families,” said NASBE Executive Director Jim Kohlmoos. “And when we look at the bigger picture of student health and education policy, study upon study shows student health is inextricably linked to academic achievement. We strive in this issue of our journal to provide policymakers and educators reliable information about a concern that was hardly being discussed just 10 years ago.”
