Knowing science is an expectation of the NGSS. What students should know include three dimensions: the Disciplinary Core Ideas, Scientific and Engineering Practices and Crosscutting Concepts. This page highlights the Disciplinary Core Ideas.
The disciplinary core ideas for one of the middle school physical science standards can be seen in figure 1. Of note is at the end of each statement there is a performance expectation code such as MS-PS2-1. These are used for each core idea so a teacher can connect what core ideas are used for each what performance expectation. The code MS-PS2-1 is a code for a performance indicator for this standard. The Disciplinary Core ideas, Scientific and Engineering Practices and Crosscutting Concepts are each labeled in this way to be a resource for teachers to know what information is in each performance expectation.
Additional detail about the learning progressions in the Disciplinary Core Ideas is provided at the NGSS web site. To see the Disciplinary Core Ideas combined with the other three dimensions of a NGSS standard click here.
What does a complete NGSS standard look like? Every NGSS standard consists of seven boxes with information related to that standard.
What other communication resources could be available for my state? There are several initiatives designed to support teachers with the implementation of the NGSS.
