New State Board Member Institute

Each year NASBE gives new state board members the opportunity to gather with experienced board members and staff at the New State Board Member Institute. NASBE helps support these new members by covering the costs of two members from each state. Held every July, the Institute is designed to equip new board members with skills, knowledge, and insider tips that will enable them to be more effective board members.

Always one of NASBE’s most popular conferences, the program includes case studies in policy development; “how to” sessions on dealing with the media and handling state board business; special current issues sessions; information on how NASBE can assist state boards and individual members; and many opportunities for questions and group participation.

If you are new to your state board and would like to find out more about the New State Board Member Institute and how you can participate, please contact boards@nasbe.org.

2015 New Member Institute

When July 24- 25, 2015 (adjourn by 4:00 p.m.)

Where: Arlington, Virginia

Hotel Information: Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City, 156 South Hayes Street Arlington, Virginia 22202, (703) 415-5000

The program for this event is in development, but our goals are always the same. State board of education members who attend NASBE’s New Member Institute will:

  • Learn what it takes to be a successful and productive member of a state board of education.
  • Build the skills needed to do the job: parliamentary procedure, communicating in the era of social media, working with the state legislature and other key stakeholders, working with the news media, working with fellow board members.
  • Discuss common policy concerns and issues, and discover real-world examples of how state boards of education are successfully addressing them.
  • Establish working relationships with new state board of education members from across the country.
  • Gain an understanding of NASBE’s resources and how the organization can help state boards in their important work.

NASBE will assume responsibility for airfare, hotel, and conference meals for a maximum of two new board members from each dues-paying state to attend the New Member Institute. Additional board members may attend at their state’s expense ($400 for new board members from a dues-paying state; $425 for veteran board members from a dues-paying state; $625 for board members from non-NASBE member states, plus travel and lodging expenses).

Registration for this event is now closed. Please contact Sharon Cannon at sharon.cannon@nasbe.org about the possibility of attending.
