The NASBE Board of Directors is looking for candidates who have a thorough understanding of the context and substance of PreK-12 education issues and who ideally possess the following types of expertise and experience:
- Experience in state board level policy making
- Ability to nurture and develop constructive relationships with state boards and their leadership
- Experience and visibility in state and national level decision making
- Understanding of the role of citizen boards in the intergovernmental educational policy system
- Experience in effective executive management of bright and innovative staff and possessing the interpersonal skills to motivate and engage staff
- Visionary perception of the role of state boards and of the evolving nature of associations
- Ability to exercise financial oversight and management of an association
- Education philosophy aligned with NASBE policy, goals and objectives
- Marketing and outreach skills and the ability to keep NASBE visible and proactive in an increasingly volatile education policy world and within the context of a 21st Century digital world
- Entrepreneurial and grantsmanship experience with the ability to diversify NASBE revenues with foundation, corporate and government resources
- Bipartisan political skills to meet the needs of a diverse national constituency
- Ability to develop and enhance partnerships with other education policy-related groups (e.g. Council of Chief State School Officers, National Governors Association, National School Boards Association)
- Understanding of the roles and the respective relationships among the board, the executive director, and the staff
- Ability to provide capacity building assistance and grant deliverables to citizen state board members with diverse challenges, political structures and cultures
- Verbal and writing skills requisite to a visible leader who will be the public face of a major national organization
