Today in Science History

On December 2 in 1942, a nuclear chain reaction is demonstrated, conducted, and produced by scientists for the first time, at 3:45 P.M. in a squash court at the University of Chicago, under the direction of Enrico Fermi. Although the reaction is the same as that used in the impending Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombs, in today's experiment only enough power to light a small flashlight is produced.
