Tennessee knows teachers are the backbone of its education system. They go to all lengths to help students learn and maneuver the trials of childhood and adolescence with skill, joy and just a touch of grace. In October, the spotlight shines on two examples of Tennessee’s finest classroom teachers.
Tennessee named Luajean Bryan as 2009 Tennessee Teacher of the Year after 35 years of teaching 10th through 12th grade mathematics. The Milken Family Foundation honored Trey Duke with the 2008 Milken Educator Award and a $25,000 check after just five years in the classroom. These teachers represent opposite ends of the spectrum in experience but share the passion and creativity that inspire students, motivate colleagues and win the respect and gratitude of parents.
Congratulations to these outstanding educators and all the honorable colleagues they represent. Read more about these exceptional individuals in the department newsroom under press releases and inside the Apple Bites newsletter. Learn about the Milken Family Foundation at www.mff.org

A quality education is the fundamental right of every child in Tennessee. The department provides many services, and it is our responsibility to ensure equal, safe, and quality learning opportunities for all students, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Therefore, our mission is to help teachers teach and children learn.
