Text based tutorial iconThis is a text based tutorial that aims to give users a general overview of NASBE's newly redesigned website. The tutorial provides screenshots of the homepage and descriptions to the various sections on the homepage.

This tutorial is a great place to start if you are unfamiliar with NASBE's new website. Future tutorials will build on the information and ideas discussed in this tutorial.

Homepage

NASBE's homepage is the first web page that is displayed when you navigate to www.nasbe.org. The homepage has been designed to provide users with the most relevant material, latest news and most frequently requested articles.

The homepage is divided into six (6) basic sections:
  1. Header
  2. General Information
  3. News
  4. Director's Message
  5. Featured Articles
  6. Menu Column

1. Header Section

The Header Section is the upper most section of the website. It is visible on all other pages on NASBE's site. The Header Section is made up of 4 basic elements:

  1. Logo - Image of NASBE's logo, located on the left most side of the Header Section.
  2. Menu bar - The Menu bar is a horizontal bar that contains links to various parts of NASBE's website. It is located at the bottom of the Header Section.
  3. Search bar - The Search bar is located at the top right-hand side of the Header Section. It contains a text field, labeled "Search NASBE", where users can input search terms and receive a list of pages on NASBE's site where those search terms were found. To the left of the Search bar you will find three (3) "A" buttons, these can be used by a user to change the default font size that the text on NASBE's website displays. In between the font size buttons and the search bar you will find three (3) rectangle shaped buttons, these can be used to change the default overall display width of NASBE's website. By clicking the smallest rectangle NASBE's website will be formatted to display in a "thin width", by clicking the medium sized rectangle NASBE's website will be displayed in a "wide width", and by clicking the largest rectangle NASBE's website will be formatted to display in a "fluid width". Fluid width means that the website will be dynamically changed based on the size of the browser window that a user is viewing the site from.
  4. Login - The login bar can be used by members to login to their NASBE user account. The login bar contains three (3) image buttons, these images correspond to the three (3) tools that a user can use. The left most button can be used to retrieve a user's account login password by a user if they have forgotten it. The middle button can be used to retrieve a user's account login name by a user if they have forgotten it. The right most button can be used to create a NASBE user account.

2. Information Section

The Information Section is located directly beneath the Header Section and is made up of 3 basic elements:

  1. Mission Statement - NASBE's official mission statement.
  2. Location - The location (Street, City, State, Zip code) of NASBE's office.
  3. Contact - The Content element provides users with the general email address, phone number and fax number that can be used to contact NASBE.

3. News Section

The News Section is located beneath the Information Section and contains 3 tabs that provide 3 types of news:
  1. National News - The National News tab will display the five (5) most recent news articles that are relevant to education on the national level. An example of an article that will displayed in this section is a Press Release dealing with the No Child Left Behind Re-authorization.
  2. NASBE Resources - The NASBE Resources tab will display the five (5) most recent articles that NASBE has published. An example of an article that will displayed in this section is a Newsletter on NASBE's High School Redesign project.
  3. NASBE Spotlight - The NASBE Spotlight tab will display the five (5) most recent articles that NASBE is spotlighting or highlighting. An example of an article that will be displayed in this section is an article on NASBE's upcoming Annual Conference.

The News Section will automatically rotate between each of the three (3) tabs. If a user places his/her mouse pointer over one of the tabs the rotation is paused. Users can click on any of the article links within a tab to view the entire article.

4. Director's Message

The Director's Message Section is located beneath the News Section, often directly in the center a user's screen when NASBE's website is first loaded. The Director's Message section displays the most recent article written by NASBE's Executive Director Brenda Welburn. It is updated on a monthly basis and provides readers with NASBE's Executive Director's view on various educational issues or hot topics being discussed in the educational realm.

5. Featured Articles

The Featured Articles Section is located beneath the Director's Message section, it displays an introduction on the two (2) most recent articles chosen by NASBE. To view the full article, click the "Read More" link at the bottom of the article's introduction.

6. Menu Column

The Menu Column is located on the left-hand side of all pages and contains links to the most frequented sections of NASBE's website. The Menu Column is comprised of four (4) sub-menus:
  1. Left Menu - The left menu is the top sub-menu on the Menu Column and contains links to:
    1. NASBE's Headline Review - Link to the most recent Headline Review article. The Headline Review is a weekly update of important state education news is sent via email to all members with email capability. This service is also available to the larger education community, helping key stakeholders and the public keep abreast of the actions of their state education leaders. When a user clicks the 'Headline Review' link, a link to the 'Headline Review Archive' is automatically placed underneath the 'Headline Review' link.
    2. Upcoming Events - A list of all NASBE events that are scheduled to take place in the future. Click on the title of any of the 'Upcoming Events' to receive more information on the event.
    3. Federal Update - Link to the most recent Federal Update Article. NASBE's Federal Update is a publication designed to help state board members understand, influence, and plan for federal education policies. In its efforts to influence national education policymaking, NASBE works to ensure that it represents the views of its members to the executive and legislative branches of the federal government, as well as to associations representing governors and state legislators, school administrators, principals, local school boards, teachers and parents. When a user clicks the 'Federal Update' link, a link to the 'Federal Update Archive' is automatically placed underneath the 'Federal Update' link.
    4. Educational Issues - A link to a categorical listing of Educational Issues provided by NASBE. NASBE provides state board members with comprehensive information on the full-range of state education issues and trends. Our nationally-respected information is scholarly, objective, and based on the most recent research available.
    5. File Repository - A link to a list of sections that contain downloadable material. Most of the materials are made available by NASBE in Adobe PDF format.
    6. Employment - A link to any employment opportunities NASBE has available. Users may click on the title of the employment opportunity for more information on the employment opportunity and/or to apply for the listed employment opportunity.
    7. Educational RSS Feeds - This section is under construction, when completed we hope that it will provide users with a one-stop-spot for all educational news that is being reported around the country.
  2. Publications Menu - The publications menu is located directly below the Left Menu on the left hand side of all NASBE webpages, it contains links to NASBE's featured publication, NASBE's archive of publications, NASBE's Journal: The State Education Standard and NASBE's bookstore.
  3. Resources - This sub-menu is located directly under the Publication sub-menu and contains links to various resource sections and content that NASBE has available. The sub-menu is divided into four (4) sections:
    1. Tutorials - A link to the section of NASBE's website where all tutorials and guides are housed. These tutorials and guides are provided in both text and video based versions.
    2. Project Pages - Links to each of the current projects webpages NASBE is working on.
    3. Study Groups - Links to each of the current study group webpages NASBE is working on.
    4. Forums - A link to all forums NASBE is hosting. Many of the forums are only available to certain groups.
  4. Quick Look Menu - The quick look menu is a collection of short introductions to various information NASBE has available.
