Obesity Prevention Project

The NASBE Obesity Prevention project is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Leadership for Healthy Communities national program to help reverse the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. The project assists state boards of education and other state policymakers in their efforts to create healthier communities to reduce rates of childhood obesity, especially among students at high risk for obesity. Through the project, NASBE champions obesity prevention in 14 states by encouraging the development of policy action plans for state-level education officials. To assess community needs, the Obesity Prevention project plans to conduct an online survey that measures the progress of policy action plans developed by state teams. To expand its network and disseminate key information, NASBE hosts an Obesity Prevention Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas on July 10-11 for the 14 state teams, conducts site visits, holds web networking meetings, provides technical assistance to state leaders and issues publications such as its planned Obesity Policy Guide, a revised Obesity Prevention edition of The State Education Standard, and its issue brief on obesity prevention policies.
