The NASBE Obesity Prevention project is funded by the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation's Leadership
for Healthy Communities national program to help reverse the growing
epidemic of childhood obesity. The project assists state boards of education and other state policymakers in their efforts
to create healthier communities to reduce rates of childhood obesity,
especially among students at high risk for obesity. Through the project, NASBE
champions obesity prevention in 14 states by encouraging the development of
policy action plans for state-level education officials. To assess community
needs, the Obesity Prevention project plans to conduct an online survey that
measures the progress of policy action plans developed by state teams. To
expand its network and disseminate key information, NASBE hosts an Obesity
Prevention Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas on July 10-11 for the 14 state
teams, conducts site visits, holds web networking meetings, provides technical
assistance to state leaders and issues publications such as its planned Obesity
Policy Guide, a revised Obesity Prevention edition of The State Education
Standard, and its issue brief on obesity prevention policies.

PowerPoint Presentations
State and local education leaders were convened by NASBE’s Obesity
Prevention Project, in partnership with the National School Boards
Association (NSBA), for two days at the Clinton Presidential Center in
Little Rock, Arkansas to review, amend, and renew their ongoing efforts
to establish school policies that promote student health and prevent
obesity. The participants are part of individual state teams that
attended a NASBE school health planning symposium last year. The teams
are composed of a state board of education member, the state director
of school health programs, the state school food service director, and
a state school board association member. The teams reviewed their
progress in meeting their state's previously established school health
goals, added physical activity and vulnerable populations into the
plans, reviewed the latest research in obesity prevention, shared their
experiences, and heard from national experts.
Here are the PowerPoints presented at the NASBE-NSBA Obesity Prevention Policy Symposium. Actual files of the presentations will be made available to participants in the near future. Our thanks again to all of our presenters who helped make this event a true success.
