Networks allow states to build on NASBE’s nationally recognized work in different fields to actively move their agendas forward and assist other states in pursuing their efforts. Board members have benefited from the support that the networks have provided them in helping them to aggressively transform their vision into practice. Through periodic meetings, state teams that comprise the Healthy Schools Network study common issues, develop policy action plans, and learn from other states’ initiatives. One network currently links state board members together in the areas of health education, while another works on issues in early childhood education. The Healthy Schools Network, comprised of 65 board members and state agency staff representing 12 states, helps Network members translate the “healthy schools” concept that they have developed into specific, state-appropriate strategies and actions using the policymaking tools at their disposal.
