The State Education Standard is NASBE's widely praised education policy journal. Now in its seventh year, each issue covers a different topic and includes feature articles written by outstanding policy analysts, researchers, administrators, and practitioners in the field. The Standard also has a variety of regular departments that cover such areas legal issues, the view from Washington , DC , the latest in state policy innovations, and an interview with a state board of education member. Upcoming themes include safety and injury prevention, high school reform, and coaching.

Policy Updates provide an overview of a single education issue, its policy implications, a description of how selected states around the country are addressing the issue, and a reference list of materials for further exploration.

Legislative Briefs are monthly briefs that review developments on major federal education policies and programs resulting from congressional and/or U.S. Department of Education initiatives.

State Improvement Initiatives highlight a successful and innovative program or policy developed by state boards and state education agencies.

Legal Briefs discuss a specific court decision that has implications for state and local education policymakers.

Boardsmanship Reviews each focus on a single topic of importance to state board operations and the policymaking process. Included are such topics as strategic planning, building effective relationships with governors and legislatures, parliamentary procedures, and professional development for policymakers.

Issue Briefs provide general background information, a national overview of the major policy issues, comparisons of the policy findings with best practice recommendations, highlights of exemplary practices, and general conclusions and recommendations.

NASBE Reports are highly respected throughout the education community for their thoughtful, well-written presentation of cutting edge issues, including improving low-performing schools, early childhood education, ensuring teacher quality, health and HIV education, schools and violence, diversity and multiculturalism, math and science education, special education, education finance, and urban education. NASBE members automatically receive a copy of each report when it is released.

NASBE’s Membership Directory , which is continually updated, lists state board members, state board executives, state education attorneys, and chief state school officers for all 50 states, selected territories, and the District of Columbia , as well as NASBE’s associate members. It is available online to members only. Members may also request a paper copy.

The NASBE Resource Binder conveniently helps members organize all of the information they receive for quick and easy access. The binder contains sections for Member Services, Policy Updates, Legislative Briefs, Issue Briefs and other reports, State Improvement Initiatives, Legal Briefs, and numerous other resources designed to enhance the work of state education leaders.
