Organized to respond to the crisis of low adolescent literacy levels, NASBE launched the State Adolescent Literacy Network to help states craft strategies to improve literacy instruction and achievement in the upper grades.

Beginning in 2007 with support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, five states—Connecticut, Kentucky, New Hampshire, Utah, and West Virginia—each developed signature plans grounded in collaborative processes, aligned structures, joint problem-solving and collective accountability.

ed_message0808.pngIt’s that time of year again, when educators, parents and media are all using that familiar phase “back to school.” While some students have been in school for a few weeks now, the end of summer marks the traditional beginning of school throughout most of the country. The demarcation of summer’s end and the beginning of school brings back memories of our own new school beginnings and all the traditions that go with it. It draws the nation’s attention back to education as a key issue in this politically charged season. There is the shared understanding of what this time of year means because most of us have been through it and brought our children through it as well. With new beginnings, we all want and hope for the best for our nation’s students. Yet hoping and wanting are clearly insufficient for supporting and nurturing each child to personal and academic success.
